TINTYPE

A tintype, also known as melainotype or ferrotype, is an old style of photograph that creates a photographic image on a thin sheet of metal or iron that has been coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. This one is a pIcture of a corporal in Civil War Union Uniform behind a cover glass fixed in a lid of a watch, measuring 1 3/8".The original hand tinting is still visible, the buttons and epaulets of the jacket and the badge on the forage cap have been lightly accented with gold enamel. Very fine condition, the image distinct with minimal wear evident. Fine Civil War collector's item.
