TINTYPE
A tintype, also known as melainotype or ferrotype, is an old style of photograph that creates a photographic image on a thin sheet of metal or iron that has been coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. Here presented is an original tintype image of a firm looking Union soldier of the Civil War era seated on a chair. He wears a frock style uniform coat with a jacket underneath. Original hand tinting is still visible on all the buttons of the uniform vest jacket, also his watch chain has been lightly accented with gold enamel. The image comes in a beautiful gutta percha union case known as "The Chuch WIndow" for display. It is marked on the paper label inside by the maker; A.P. Critchlow and CO., Manufacturers of Daguero type cases. They claim to be the "Original Inventors" of the compsition for the union cases and of the Embracing Riveted Hinges. The Hinge Patent of Oct. 14, 1856 Is present. The original gutta percha case itself is in excellent condition with the original felt. Size 2 3/8" x 1 7/8". Excellent overall.
