TINTYPE - AMBROTYPE

A tintype, also known as melainotype or ferrotype, is an old style of photograph that creates a photographic image on a thin sheet of metal or iron that has been coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. An ambrotype is an underexposed, underdeveloped, wet-collodion negative on glass that, when viewed with a dark background, appears as a positive image. The dark background is commonly a black varnish applied to the glass base but is sometimes a separate material behind the glass or the glass base itself may be dark. Ambrotypes first came into use in the early 1850s. This photograph depicts a young Union soldier, he wears an open military jacket.The image is mounted in an embossed leather union case with single latch closure. An embossed rust velvet pad with central three-leaf motif and scroll border on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass-covered photograph. Behind the tintype is an ambrotype picture of a young female (his wife or girl-friend?). Tintype presents in good, as-found antique condition, with patina and some loss of detail on the image. Ambrotype of female is in a simular condition. Her jewelry has been tinted Tinting and embellishments are clearly defined. The tintype is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window that is decorated with a canon, a drum and 2 banners. It also has the inscription; "The Union now and forever". The size of the Tin and Ambrotype are Ninth Plate 2"x 21/2". Union case is in excellent condition. Very fine and rare item of a couple during the Civil War!
