AMBROTYPE

An ambrotype is an underexposed, underdeveloped, wet-collodion negative on glass that, when viewed with a dark background, appears as a positive image. The dark background is commonly a black varnish applied to the glass base but is sometimes a separate material behind the glass or the glass base itself may be dark. Ambrotypes first came into use in the early 1850s. This photograph shows a well dressed gentleman in a jacket and top hat. The picture is framed with embossed decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window and is mounted in an embossed leather union case with single latch closure. A dark red velvet pad with embossed crest on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass-covered photograph. The outside of the case has ornate scrollwork and floral designs embossed on the leather, along with gilt trim. Behind the picture is written: "C.A. Griffin, Bellaire, Ohio. March 8/58. I presume it is the name of the person, the location and date the picture was taken. Pre Civil War era. Size 2 1/2" x 2 1/4". Excellent quality!
