AMBROTYPE

An ambrotype is an underexposed, underdeveloped, wet-collodion negative on glass that, when viewed with a dark background, appears as a positive image These ambrotype images are done by applying the image emulsion onto a ruby colored glass plate which makes them clear but fragile. Ambrotypes first came into use in the early 1850s. This ambrotype is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. It means that the image measures approximately 2 5/8 inches by 3 1/4 inch. Presented here is an ambrotype with a picture of a soldier in a Civil War uniform. It is mounted in an embossed leather union case with double latch closure showing light traces of usage, unfortunately both closure hooks are massing. A "rare" cobalt blue velvet pad with scroll border and a diamond-shaped device on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass photograph. The ambrotype is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window. This is an image of very high quality!
