AMBROTYPE
n ambrotype is an underexposed, underdeveloped, wet-collodion negative on glass that, when viewed with a dark background, appears as a positive image These ambrotype images are done by applying the image emulsion onto a ruby colored glass plate which makes them clear but fragile. Ambrotypes first came into use in the early 1850s. This ambrotype is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. It means that the image measures approximately 2 5/8 inches by 3 1/4 inch. Presented here is an ambrotype with a picture of a soldier wearing an overcoat over his Civil War uniform. Original hand tinting is still visible on all the buttons of the overcoat and uniform jacket, plus the badge on his cap. They have been lightly accented with gold enamel. The image is mounted in an embossed leather union case with a single latch closure. The case is in excellent condition. An rose velvet advertising pad with embossed crest and scrolled border on the inner verso that is marked; "From J.W. Blanchards Photographic Gallery. No.2 First St. Opposite Troy House. Troy N.Y.", protects the glass photograph. Advertisements on pads are seldom found. The ambrotype is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window. This is an image of very high quality!
