TINTYPE
A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion. Tintypes enjoyed their widest use during the 1860s and 1870s, but lesser use of the medium persisted into the early 20th century. This one is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. It means that the image measures approximately 2 5/8 inches by 3 1/4 inch. This is full view of a picture of a seated Civil War soldier in uniform. The image is mounted in an embossed leather "half" (one half missing) union case with a military motif; the eagle with shield and banner. The picture is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window. Tintype in excellent condition.
