SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1873 THROWEL BAYONET
This Model evolved into a very satisfactory design. It has generally been accepted as "the" throwel bayonet of the U.S. services. Made by the Springfield Arsenal with a total of 10.706. The forward section of the handle is usually lightly stamped "PAT APR 16ht 1872. The throwel bayonet was to be held in the hand when it was used to dig a trench, the rifle was not to be used as a shovel handle. It was customarily worn in a scabbard and was to be fixed to the rifle only in combat or emergency situations. It was made for use with the Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Cal. 45-70 rifle. No scabbard. Very fine condition.
