CIVIL WAR FUZES

Very nice complete rewrapped packet containing five paper time fuzes manufactured at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, PA. In late 1862, all paper time fuze production shifted to the Frankford Arsenal for standardization. From 1863-1865 paper time fuzes were manufactured at the Frankford Arsenal in a variety of colorful packets with various burn times. These were used by both Union and Confederate Artillery. This packet contains five surplus paper time fuses. They are contained in a paper wrapped, drilled wooden block. The face of the packet is stenciled according to the burn time for each fuse. The fuses are labeled on top of lid 5,10,10,15, and 15 (seconds burn timle). You can see the old Frankford Arsenal label partially readable under the outer wrapper on the back ( "To take the fuze from the package, tear the paper at top by raising the piece of tape, and press against the small end of the fuze with the finger"). When these were rewrapped, they were lightly coated with a waterproofing agent for preservation.Top lid has been opened and only the first 5 second fuze is removable, the rest is still sealed in the package. This example is in very fine shape with very little damage to the paper and five pull tabs present. The 4 pictures of a 10 second fuze serves as an example!
