SHARPS NEW MODEL 1863 CARBINE CARTRIDGE CONVERSION

#88852 Cal. 50-70 Center Fire. Standard 22" Round Barrel. Gun retains about 85% of the original blue with some surface rust spots. Wood has some storage and handlings marks but is in very fine condition. Mechanically perfect with an excellent bore. Frame has some case colors in the protected areas with the balance a smokey gray/brown patina. This Model 1863 Carbine was manufactured in 1864, and as saw service in the Civil War. An "E.A.W" (Elijah A. Williams, military inspector for Sharps in 1864) military acceptance stamp is situated on the plate below the sling bar. Following the Civil War, the U.S. Government in 1867 decided to convert many of the military percussion arms to metallic cartridge breechloaders for use in the Indian Wars. A total of 31.098 carbines were converted by Sharps. They all received an extra inspection stamp "DFC" '(David F. Clark) in the center of the left side of the buttstock. This conversion has the relined bore with three-groove rifling. All conversions were refinished by the factory, hence the weak markings on the barrel. Approximately 27.000 were converted with a three groove lined barrel. A carbine that has seen use in the Civil War and the Indian Wars! Very fine condition! Cartridges shown for information purposes only.
