STARR MODEL 1865 CARTRIDGE CARBINE
#35847B. Cal.52 Rim-Fire. Standard 21" round barrel retaining about 80% of its original blue. Some traces of colour case on frame and hammer. Stocks have numerous small scratches from handling and storage. Mechanically perfect plus an excellent bore. The left side of the barrel is marked "S.T.B."+ Two perfect Ordnance inspection marks stamped on the left stock wrist, with the initials of Samuel T. Bugbee, army inspector. The toe of the buttplate has a star mark (meaning unknown). This carbine which is similar to the Civil War percussion carbine in configuration and markings, was modified to incorporate rim firing pin, cartridge extractor, and a redesigned shorter straight hammer. It is one of the 5,002 manufactured under government contract by the Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York. They were delivered to the Ordnance Department between March and May 1865. Approximately 1000 in March, 2000 in April and the balance during the last weeks of the Civil War. A solid honest carbine in very fine condition.
