TINTYPE
A tintype, also known as melainotype or ferrotype, is an old style of photograph that creates a photographic image on a thin sheet of metal or iron that has been coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. A well-preserved original, authentic period, mid-19th century, US Civil War period, black and white, antique glass covered tintype photograph of a young, seated Union soldier, mounted in original half case. The stamped, embossed leather covered, hinged wooden viewing case has one half missing. The tintype is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window. Behind the picture is name and address of the Photographer; Bailey's Photograph Gallery, 371 Canal Street, New York. Measures 1 3/4" x 2". Tintype in excellent condition.
