COLT MODEL 1861 SPECIAL RIFLE-MUSKET BAYONET
This is an original Civil War socket bayonet made by the Collins & Company of Collinsville, Hartford CT. The total length of the bayonet is 21” long while the blade itself is approximately 17½” long. This M1855 bayonet was made for the Colt Special Model 1861 rifle musket, which has a slightly larger diameter barrel than standard Civil War Union rifled muskets. It was manufactured for Colt under direct contract with Collins and Company of Hartford, Connecticut. It is estimated that only about 10,000 were actually produced and delivered and all are marked on the socket with C & Co. stamps. It is identical in all other respects to a standard .58 socket bayonet but again, is slightly larger in diameter as made to fit the steel barrel of the Special 1861 pattern weapon. Maker’s mark “C & Co” is visible on the socket. Bold “US” is on the top flat of the blade. Locking ring and screw are excellent. Blade surface is clean and semi-bright. There is an " threaded hole" in the back of the socket, it's purpuse is unknown. A rare bayonet, not easy to find in a very fine condition.
