SHARPS & HANKINS MODEL 1862 NAVY CARBINE
#8828. Cal 52 Rimfire (56-52RF Spencer cartridge). Breechloader Carbine, Navy Type. Tinned finish! Standard 24" round barrel with leather covering as protection against rusting (according to the Flayderman Guide), according to Roy Marcot (THE authourity on Sharps Firearms), the Navy version had a 24-inch barrel with a leather cover to protect the shooters hand from excessive heat caused by continuous firing, leather was choosen instead of wood because it reduces the overall weight of the carbine. The leather is secured by two screws at breech of barrel, and a band of steel at muzzle. About 98% of the original leather covering present! The carbine has a 2nd. model floating firing pin mounted in the recoil shield. A vent hole, to relieve overpressure in the breech and reduce instances of cartridge case ruptures is present on the right side of the receiver. Stock is an oil-finished walnut with a tinned plated buttplate. Standard front and rear sight. Mechanically perfect, bright & shiny bore. Matching serial number is located on the upper tang, on the lever bar, and the underside of the barrel. Made in 1864. Of a total production of about 8.000, about 6.686 were purchased by the Navy. These carbines are believed to have seen extensive service aboard of various vessels during the Civil War which may account for many seen with missing or heavily damaged leather. Fine condition.
