  #172XX. Cal.54 Percussion. Fifth Model (Guide screw in center of right frame). Standard 21" Round Barrel. Gun retains 99% of original blue and at least 95% of case colour. Wood has some storage and handling marks. Gun has 2 perfect military cartouches E.P.R. (Edwin P. RIichardson), and R.K.W. (Robert K. Whitely), plus several inspector initials on various parts., Mechanism is excellent, bore is mint. A total of 43.000 fith models were made between 1863 and 1865. This one was manufactured and delivered in 1863! Although delivered in 1863, it has the "MODEL OF 1864" marking on top of the frame (an anomaly yet to be explained!). The Burnside Carbine was very popular with the cavalry units as it was considered very accurate and reliable. A few of the cavalry regiments being armed with the Burnside carbine during thr Civil War were; 1st New Jersey, 1st Michigan, 3rd Indiana, 5th, 6th & 7th Ohio, 3rd West Virginia 13th, 14th and 18th Pennsylvania.
