SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1884 U.S. TRAPDOOR CARBINE
#341XXX. Cal. 45-70-405 CF. Standard 22" Barrel. Retains about 70% of original blue. No casehardening remaining. Has a blued sixth type breechblock (with the deeply stamped "3" that looks like an "8", and the bottom line of the "L" in "Model" missing after cc.#300.000, is correct!), this type of breechblock was used till late into 1886. Has a fourth form model 1879 rear sight which has a "C" stamped on it's left side denoting a Carbine sight. Barrel has VP and eagle marking. Military cartouche is present on left side of stock, but only partially visible. Same with the firing proof cartouche located behind the trigger plate. "U.S." present on butt plate heel. Wooden stock shows normal wear and traces of usage, but is very sound. Issued in 1886! Mechanically perfect and has a bright "near new" bore! A total of about 21.000 Model 1884 carbines were manufactured (6.000 in 1886). An above average carbine in a fine + condition. Cartridges shown for information purposes only.
