SPENCER MODEL 1860 CARBINE

#24XXX. Cal.52RF (56-56). Standard 22" round barrel with original 6 grooves. Barrel retains the original folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards. Top flat on the receiver, forward of the hammer, is stamped with “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS / PAT’S MARCH 6, 1860” in three lines. Stamping is lightly worn but present. Frame and barrel have the same serial number. All other markings are correct. A single capital "M" sub-inspection mark is present on the left barrel flat where it meets the receiver, and a second inspection mark " E" on the hammer. The loading tube is the version for the model 1860 that was made without the ribs on the cap. All of the metal parts have a pleasing brownish gray smooth tone. The action of the gun works perfecty and has a very fine bore. Produced and delivered in April of 1864. There is no visible cartouche on the buttstock. According to Roy Marcot (THE authority on Spencer), cartouching started somewhere in 1864, but many cartouches were obliterated due to heavy wear and use during the Civil War. The buttstock and forend are solid and are free of any breaks, cracks or repairs. Cavalry regiments who were issued the M1860 Spencer carbine were: 1st Connecticut Cavalry, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th Michigan Cavalry, 4th US Cavalry, 5th New York Cavalry, 1st New York Veteran Cavalry, 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry, 8th Indiana Cavalry, and the 1st New Jersey Cavalry. This is an attractive Spencer Carbine with a lovely untouched look that is 100% complete, correct and original, in its original Civil War configuration and has no post-war alterations. Not easy to find!!! Cartridges shown for information purposes only.
